Create an image into a SVG in SCAL4

Posted on 9th February 2018
*note- SCAL4 Pro used.

- Open SCAL4 software.

- Go to File - Import.

- When you import an image into SCAL4 you will get a cut line around the outline of the image like below, but to make it an SVG with each part of the image separate to cut in different coloured media, we need to do the following steps below.

- Click on Trace image. Then go to choose image and select your image. I am using a jpeg from the cute animals bundle at

- When the image appears in your trace window, make sure that you have color layers selected and change the number of colors to 1 more than you have in your image. Click on update preview to ensure that all layers are selected.

- Once you update the preview you will see that the colours have appeared in your left window. this is a good way to ensure every separate color has been accounted for. Once you are happy click OK.

- Your image will appear on your design space.

- Select your image and right click then break apart. This will separate each layer of color.

- You can now pull apart each colored layer. If there are parts of your image that have more than one piece, select them together and right click and group.

- You can now place each section top of each other ready to convert into a SVG.

- It is good to note when you go into preview section that you can see every part now has cut lines.

- Once you are happy, go to File then Export.

- Select where you would like to save your SVG file. Name it and in the drop down box select SVG. Once saved into a SVG file you can use in many different cutters.
