With this fun and quick drawing exercise, you can use any art supply to create your party clipart. From traditional mediums such as wax crayons and colored pencils to digital apps including Procreate. Whatever you have available will work with our drawing guide.

Step 1 - Make a Rough Sketch of your Balloon

Let’s begin drawing our balloon illustration by using a sketching medium. This can be any removable medium such as a pencil. You can also use the lightest colored medium you have to make your rough sketches.

Start with sketching a circular shape on the top half of your drawing space. You can even change up your shape to create hearts, rainbows, or other objects for a themed party illustration.

Draw a shape for your balloon

Below your balloon shape, draw a small upside-down heart for the tied-off bottom piece.

Sketch the tied-off bottom piece on your balloon

Lastly, sketch the string or rope that is connected to the bottom of the tied-off piece. You can create a simple straight line, create a curled line, or draw a bow or two on your string.

Step 2 - Line your Balloon Rough Sketch

Using a lining medium, such as a pen, marker, or dark color medium, trace and outline your balloon art sketch. Begin by tracing over the outer sketch lines of your balloon and tied-off shape to create a single shape. See our example image below.

For our outlines, we are using these ink Procreate brushes that have pressure sensitivity. So we are able to change the thickness of our line to give it a unique look.

Then, line the string and any other elements you have added to your drawing. Once you are done, clear your rough sketches to clean up your drawing if you used a removable medium.

Step 3 - Add Color to your Balloon Outline

Switch to your color medium for this step. You can make use of any palette you have available to add color to your balloon illustration. Easily and quickly make a few outlines of your drawing to create a rainbow of colors. Apply a ready-made color palette to your party drawing or or work with color combination ideas for a specific theme.

Feel free to add extra shading, textures, or elements to complete your drawing. If you are using Procreate, we have a great tutorial on how to blend colors using 4 different methods.
