How to Draw a Hoodie
Learn to bring your fashion sketches to life with this how to draw a hoodie drawing guide
Follow this step-by-step drawing exercise and learn how to draw a hoodie. We will carefully guide you from making rough sketches to applying color and details. Add your illustration to your digital library of clothes clipart and product templates, or make stickers and sublimated gifts.
Before we zip our way down the steps, let us gather our supplies. For this hoodie drawing, you can use any type of medium you have on hand. Our FREE drawing tutorials are for artists and digital illustrators of all skill levels.
Step 1 - Sketch the Base Shape of Your Hoodie
In our first step, we will sketch some basic shapes that make up our hoodie's base shape. You can use any medium to make your rough sketches. You can use an erasable pencil or a light color of your drawing medium to cover up rough sketches.
For the first shape, draw a large vertical rectangle for the center fabric piece of your hoodie.
At the top of the rectangle, sketch the hood in the center as a downward-pointing triangle about half the rectangle's width. Below, draw a wide “V” that stretches past the triangle (shown in blue).
Step 2 - Define the Shape of your Hoodie
In this step, we will define the shape of our hoodie by adding sleeves and shaping the hood. Start with the sleeves, and sketch a small rectangle close to the bottom edge of the main center shape.
Then from the top corner of the small rectangle, draw a curved line towards the top corner of the rectangle. The sleeves lines are more rounded at the bottom and pointed toward the top.
Connect and define the top lines of your hoodie as we did below in red and blue. We added a curved seam line where the hood attaches to the body piece (shown in green).
Add some wavy lines along the side of the rectangle for the inner sleeve line. See our example sketch below.
Step 3 - Add Details to your Hoodie Sketch
Let us continue our rough sketches by adding details to our hoodie. Draw three lines inside the hood to create a fold. Then add drawstrings coming out of the bottom of the hood shape.
Create fabric folds at the bottom of your sleeves by drawing curved lines, as we did above. Then create the hoodie pocket by drawing a rectangle with inward curved corners at the top.
Step 4 - Outline the Sketches of your Hoodie
In our fourth step, replace your sketching medium with a permanent one to create your line drawing. Begin tracing the outer sketch lines of your hoodie. Remember to pay close attention to your sketches, as you may only want to outline some of them.
You can look at our example images if you need help deciding which sketch lines to define.
After outlining your main hoodie shape, trace more significant elements, such as the inner lines of your sleeves and hood.
Continue lining the rest of your hoodie and clean up your drawing by removing your rough sketches when you are done.
We drew lines on the bottom edges of the sleeves and center of our hoodie for added texture. If you want to add more lined textures or elements in the same style as your outlines, you can do so now before applying color.
Step 5 - Add Color to your Hoodie Outline
With our hoodie outlines done, we will apply color and stitch details to add a unique look. You can use any color for your drawing or make use of ready-made color palette combinations.
On top of your base colors, you can do anything you want, from shading and patterns to elements and textures. Our hoodie clipart used these Procreate stitch brushes to add realistic stitch detailing.
