How to Draw a Duck

Our quacking tutorial will show you how to draw a duck in 4 simple steps

Today's step-by-step drawing guide will show you how to draw a duck easy. Ducks' unique shapes and colorful feathers make them a popular drawing subject. You can easily apply your illustration to bird clipart themes, make sublimated t-shirts, or add it to your hand-drawn digital library collection.

Drawing a duck - final result

Want to add your duck and other farm animal clipart to your collection? Check out our free drawing tutorials on how to draw a pig and drawing an owl.

Our drawing exercises are for everyone and can be used with the drawing tools you have on hand. So whether you like working with paint, crayons, or Procreate, you can follow along.

Step 1 - Sketch the Duck Base Shape

In our first step, we will create the base shape of our duck. We recommend using a sketching medium that you can erase or cover with opaque colors later.

Draw the Head and Body

Start by drawing a circle for the head, then leaving a gap, draw a large oval for the body. The oval and head should align on either the left or right side. Ensure the oval is slightly narrower on the side opposite the head.

Draw the body and head of your duck

Then, connect the head to the body by drawing curved lines to make the neck as we did below.

Add the Feet and Beak

Draw two feet below your duck's body. To make the feet draw a reversed "L" shape as we did in our example sketch.

Sketch the duck feet

Next, add the beak in the shape of a long triangle with a rounded end. Our duck's beak is on the left side and about half the length of the head's width.

Step 2 - Add the Final Duck Details

Add the final details to your duck sketch, such as the eyes, tail, and wings. Start by drawing the small details on the head and beak, such as a small eye, beak line, and nostril (shown in blue). Then add shape to the body by adding a pointed tail, as we did in red.

Add the final duck details

Next, add two curved lines to the back of the body to make a rough wing shape. And around the neck, draw a double line and a long curved line on the chest for the mallard duck pattern.

Step 3 - Permanently Outline your Rough Sketches

Once you are happy with the overall shape of your duck, it's time to make your sketches permanent. Use a pen, marker, or outline brush to darken the final duck outlines. Trace the outer lines of the whole body, head, and neck, along with the beak and feet first.

Outline your outer sketch lines of your duck

Continue outlining the details on the head and wing sketch lines. To add some texture, we made our outline bumpy for our duck's wing.

For the pattern on the neck, we did not add it to our line drawing as it will be a guide when adding color. But feel free to make it permanent if you want to.

Define your duck details

Step 4 - Color and Shade your Duck

For the final step, add color to your drawing to bring the duck to life. You can use watercolors, colored pencils, or markers to apply your color palette to your duck illustration.

Apply your color palette to your duck drawing

Add extra detail to your bird illustration using different shades to create depth and dimension. You can easily layer on colors or use these 4 ways to blend in Procreate to try other techniques.
