How to Create the Perfect Rose Drawing

How to Create the Perfect Rose Drawing

Did you know that 65% of Americans feel special when they receive flowers? This was one of the findings of a study by the Society of American Florists. Real flowers are nice and all, but what about a hand-crafted rose drawing for someone special? Time and effort count for a lot, and you get to practice your creative skills too.

How to Create the Perfect Rose Drawing

But how do you draw a beautiful rose? Fear not. Drawing a rose is easier than you think. Here’s a quick guide to get you started. Check out how to draw a rose for a more in-depth tutorial.

Grab your pencil set and read up on our rose drawing tips below!

Gather Your Tools for Rose Drawing

These are all you need to draw your rose:

2-3 sketching pencils - HB, 2B, 6B

Fine tip markers for detail - black and color

Sketching pad or A4 media paper (90 to 130 GSM)

Eraser

For tech wizards, open your Procreate software

Why not get more creative with your projects using some flower petals, glitter, or PVA glue raindrops?

1. Sketch the Outline of Your Rose

Grab a beautiful rose or a floral photo to use as a design model. Now, sketch an oval swirl in the center of your paper. Just under it, draw a heart shape with the crease lining up with the middle of the oval swirl.

Add a semi-circle to the top of your heart, stretching from peak to peak like a rainbow. Then, draw a larger heart shape around your drawing, starting from the middle of the semi-circle.

Just below this, add a heart-shaped blob for a petal. Again, draw another heart shape connecting the top drawing with the petal shape. Carry on adding petals around the bottom and lower middle of your rose.

2. Add Some Details to Your Sketch

Did you know creating art boosts our mental well-being? Design Bundles offers tons of coloring pages for all age groups!

First, sketch in the line details for the rose petals.

Then, define the rose drawing by going over your sketch with a permanent pen. Use the bleeding ink brush in Procreate to get the same result.

Add jagged points to the petals to mimic a real, beautiful rose. Erase the softer sketch lines from your outline once done.

3. Bring Your Rose to Life with Color

What type of rose is your favorite? If you're using software like Procreate, you can add or change solid color with a paint bucket tool. Learn more about using color palettes in Procreate.

Practice your drawing skills by shading the inner parts of your rose. Add shadows to areas where there will be less “light”, such as where petals are layered or close together. Procreate's stipple texture brush is perfect for this.

Add a little Gaussian blur to smooth things out afterward.
