Step 1 - Sketch the Shape of the Boat
Let's begin by creating the shape of our boat using a sketching medium. This can be any pencil or light medium for your rough boat sketch. Using a soft hand when making your initial sketch is important to make it easier to erase or make corrections as you go along.
Shape the Hull
Start drawing on the lower half of your drawing area, and sketch a bowl shape for the bottom of your boat, also known as the hull. Your boat hull can be shallow like ours or more rounded like a half circle.
Add the Mast
Right above the hull, in the center, sketch a long rectangular shape to create the mast. This is the pole that your boat's sails will attach to.
Add Sails
Next, add a sail or two attached to your boat's mast. The sails should be narrow at the top and broader at the bottom, like a half triangle. But feel free to add your own creative touch to your ship drawing.
Add Decorations
Give your boat a theme by adding decorations. Your decorations can include anything from windows on the hull to bunting clipart with flags, life buoy rings, and patterns.
Step 2 - Permanently Define your Boat Outline
Once you have created the boat's shape, it is time to define your sketch and make your permanent line art. You can use any black or permanent medium to darken your sketch lines, such as a marker or digital inking brush.
Start tracing the sketch lines of large or main pieces like the hull, mast, sail, and windows. Then, define the smaller details to complete your boat outlines and remove any remaining sketches.
Step 3 - Add Color to your Drawing
Now that you have defined the boat's outline, it is time to add color to your drawing. Apply your favorite color combinations or use a pre-designed color palette to match your theme.
