For your couch clipart, there are endless ways you can decorate and color it. So, before we begin our furniture design, gather your drawing and coloring supplies. You can use any type of medium from colored pencils to paint, or digital apps like Procreate.
We are using Procreate with brushes already provided in the brush library to make our drawing. To add the colors and textures we are using these Procreate pattern brushes.
Step 1 - Create the Base Shape of your Couch
Using a pencil that is easy to erase for the first and second steps is highly recommended. You can use a lighter color medium but this might be more difficult to cover up when adding color.
Let us start off by creating the base shape. Draw three horizontal lines across your page. Leave a space between each of your lines. The top and bottom lines will be the max height of your couch.
Depending on the width of the design, draw a vertical line on the left and right side between the bottom two lines. Then, between the middle and top lines, draw angled lines extending from the horizontal lines to the top. See our image below for a better idea.
The shape we created will be our guide for the height and width of our couch drawing.
Step 2 - Draw the Couch Shape and Details
In the second step, we are going to continue using the sketching medium to add shapes and details. We are going to create the front and back shape of the couch. Then, add a few pillows for the details. You can add throw pillows, a blanket, or other objects.
Add Shape to your Couch
Between the bottom two lines, draw a vertical line close to the left and right sides of the base shape. This will be the front of the armrest on our couch. Between the armrests, close to the bottom, draw a horizontal line for the lower base of your couch.
In the center of your couch sketch, draw a vertical line from the top to the couch base. On the left and right side, close to the inner armrest line, draw a line going up. Extend another angled line below it, going towards the middle point of the armrest.
Our image below will help if you need a visual guide.
Add the Final Details
We have created the basic shape, so we can now add the final sketch details. At the bottom of your couch, add the legs. You are welcome to shape them however you want. Roughly draw the throw pillows or blankets on top of the couch, just below the middle guideline.
Step 3 - Permanently Outline the Couch Sketch
With your rough sketches done, change over to your outlining medium. While outlining the design, leave the overlapping sketch lines you don't want to keep in the drawing.
First, outline your details on the couch, the couch back, and the seat pillows.
Next, outline the rest of the sketch design. On the seat cushions (shown in red), we made a horizontal line close to the bottom. Add any extra details you want in your illustration.
After you have outlined the sketch and added the final details, remove the rough sketch lines.
Step 4 - Add Color to the Couch
With the outline complete, we can add color, shading, and texture to the illustration. In this step, add your own creative style using any color combination or a mixture of hues and gradients.
Create a solid color couch, or add shading with Procreate texture brushes. It's a good idea to first add your solid color, then build up the design with shading.
If you are using a drawing app, check out our tutorial on how to shade in Procreate. You can then add patterns, metallic textures, or even go crazy with glitter. Why not add a bit of pizzazz with one of our Bold Script fonts?
We hope that this tutorial was fun to follow and has sparked your imagination to create amazing home décor projects. Pull the kids in for some entertainment and create sticker versions for a paper cut-out house. This design will look great in a modern doll's house.
