How to Draw a Frog
Jump into our fascinating tutorial and learn how to draw a frog with this drawing guide
With today’s fun drawing exercise, you will learn how to draw a frog. From basic sketches and outlines, to adding color and patterns, this is a great tutorial for improving your drawing skills. Imagine creating awesome mugs, or sublimated shirts with your cute frog drawing. So, let's hop to it and get started!
You can also create cartoon frogs and turn them into sticker sheets in Cricut Design Space.
Before we jump into the steps, gather your drawing tools. We are going to use Procreate to make our frog drawing, but you can use any medium you have on hand. You are welcome to use brushes already available in the app or the tons of Procreate brushes available on Design Bundles.
Step 1 - Roughly Sketch the Frog Base Shape
In our first step, we are going to use a sketching medium to roughly draw the base shape of our frog. Sketch with a pencil or a light color medium that you can cover up.
Draw a circle for the belly and the back end of the frog. This can be done freehand or by tracing an object.
Roughly sketch a long, rounded oblong shape that is the same width as your circle. Place this at the top right of the circle for the head. Angle this shape to the right as seen in our image below.
Step 2 - Add the Frog Legs and Eyes
In this step, basic shapes will be sketched for the front and back legs, including the eyes. With curved and straight lines, these shapes will act as guides for placement and sizing of the feet and eyes.
Add the Front and Back Legs
Beginning with the front legs (sketched in red below), draw a boomerang shaped rectangle. Position this inside the circle, with the bottom end extending outside of the circle.
The top of the rectangle should be going in the same direction as the head. The bottom should be angled down and slightly to the right.
Sketch another rectangle leading from the head shape. This will be for the front right leg of our drawing.
At the bottom on both sides of the circle, sketch a pointed shape (shown in blue) like an arch. The one on the left side should be bigger. These will be our frog's back legs.
Add the Eye Shapes
Next, add the eye shapes by roughly sketching a half circle at the top of the head. Then, to the left side of this shape, sketch a full circle. The full circle shape will be the front view of the frog's eye. The half circle on the right will be the back view of the other eye.
Step 3 - Complete the Sketched Details on Your Frog
Let's complete our rough sketch by adding the final details to our frog’s face. This will be the eye and mouth details including the feet.
Add the Face Details
Inside the left eye shape, sketch an oval for the eye. Now, add a curved line below it for the bottom eyelid. Below the eye, from the right side, draw a long curved line for the mouth edge.
Sketch a line from the far left corner of the mouth edge and connect to left side of the eye. See our image below for direction.
For the mouth line or opening, draw a line from the right side towards the inside corner of the mouth edge.
Add the Feet
Looking at our drawing below, we sketched the star shaped feet on both of the front legs. The back foot was added on the left back leg. You can position the feet how you want to or follow our image below.
Step 4 - Outline the Rough Frog Sketch
Now we can outline our rough sketch. Use any defining or permanent medium you want. We also have a huge selection of calligraphy brushes for a variation of line thickness.
Outline the Outer Sketch Edge
Define the outermost sketch lines, then add the inner lines. Towards the right back leg, the belly outline was lowered a bit so it was less rounded. You can see this in our image below.
Outline the Facial Details
Next, outline the eye and mouth details. Additional details like a pupil and wavy lines on the back were also drawn in. You can add more details if you like, creating a simple frog design or something more complex. Once the outline and details are done, remove your rough sketches.
Step 5 - Add Color to Your Frog Illustration
With Nature's diverse color palette, you can use any colors you choose. We added a base color first, using light and dark green, yellow, and brown. Brown was used to distinctly separate the legs from the body.
Next, we added white spots on the upper part of the body and lines for the eyes. Shading was applied with darker colors of green and brown to the undersides of the body. Use solid colors for shading or create a blended effect with the Procreate smudge tool.
Great job on your completing frog drawing! Create humorous cards with frog jokes, coloring pages for educational purposes, and many other projects. We hope this tutorial was fun to follow along with and inspired you to creating more fascinating animal drawings.
