Step 1 - Make Rough Sketches of your Guitar

Let us begin sketching the shape and design of our guitar drawing. With a sketching medium, you are going to create the base shape, and add details like the strings, tuning pegs and add a fun pattern.

Create the Base Shape

Starting with the bottom, create the body shape of your guitar sketch. Sketch a rough circle in the size you want your guitar body to be. Then, draw a rounded shape that is narrower than your circle at the top. See our sketches one and two in the image below.

Create the base shape of your guitar

Next, create the neck above the body by drawing a narrow rectangle that is about half the height of the guitar’s body. On top of the neck, add the headstock as a squared shape that is narrower at the top with rounded corners.

Add the Details

With the base shape sketched, let's begin adding details. Starting at the top, draw six tuning pegs, three on each side of the headstock, and six small circles inside as we did.

In the top half of your guitar’s body, draw a circle for the sound hole. Next, draw a small rectangle below it for the bridge.

Lastly, carefully draw each of the six strings from the bridge up the neck. Then, connect each string to the small circle you drew in the headstock.

Add a Design

Create any kind of design on your guitar’s body for a fun music illustration. We sketched a big lighting bolt in the center with a few stars.

Step 2 - Create the Outlines of your Guitar

With an outlining medium, like a pen, trace over your sketch lines to make your outlines permanent. As you are outlining your sketch, pay close attention to which sketch lines you trace over. Some of your rough sketches you may not want to make permanent.

Create a single shape by outlining the sketches around the headstock and neck. Trace around the body sketches and the tuning pegs. Lastly, trace your sound hole, bridge, strings, and design.

Create defined outlines of your guitar

Step 3 - Add Color to your Guitar Outline

In the last step of our drawing lesson, let's add some color to our outline. To color your guitar illustration, get creative and use any set of colors you want. Have a look at ready-made color palettes to get color inspiration for your drawing.

Apply color and highlights to your guitar drawing

Tip: add extra depth and dimension to your guitar art by adding highlight and shadow lines on your guitar’s body, neck, and headstock.

What a rocking guitar you have created! Experiment with different designs like flowers or dinosaurs to change the theme and combine with other guitar clipart for your projects.
