How to Draw a School

Follow this beginner drawing guide and learn how to draw a school in 3 easy steps!

Follow this beginner-friendly drawing tutorial and learn how to draw a school in three simple steps. We'll guide you through sketching out the basic school shape, adding details such as windows and doors, and finishing off with outlining and coloring your school. Easily apply your illustration to crafts like creating sticker sheets, coloring pages, repeating patterns, or saving it to your digital library.

School drawing - final result and use example

To get started with this beginner drawing guide, get your supplies ready. This tutorial will require sketching, lining, and coloring mediums. Use anything from traditional supplies like paint, pastels, and crayons to digital applications such as Procreate.

Step 1 - Sketch the Shape of the School

Draw rough sketches of your school with a sketching medium, such as a pencil and a ruler. If you are using Procreate for your school drawing to make your sketches, use the grid drawing guide in Procreate to help with sizing and planning.

Create the Base Shape

Start drawing the base shape of the school. The shape should include the main building or buildings, additional structures such as a gym or auditorium, and outdoor features like a playground or sports field.

For our base shape, we sketched a rectangle and divided it into three. See our example sketch below.

Shape the Roof

Inside your base sketch, begin shaping the roof of your school. Start with your center roof, which will be the highest point of your drawing. Draw a triangle in the center without the bottom side, and draw angled lines close by as we did in our sketch below.

Next, draw horizontal lines to create the top and bottom sides of the roof (seen in red sketch lines below). Then, shape the bottom of the middle roof (shown in blue sketches).

Add Windows and a Door

Now that you have your base shape and roof sketches, you can add your school's door and windows. You can shape your door and windows any way you want, so feel free to get creative and create your shapes to design a themed school.

Think of things like drawing a diamond window for a princess school or creating a wizard school with a cauldron-shaped door.

Add the School Sign

At the top center of your school building, draw a long rectangle and add your school name sign.

Add Details

Lastly, add the final touches to your building. These details can include a clock, windows lines, or architectural details you want to have. Pay attention to the scale and proportions of the building, making sure that everything looks balanced.

Step 2 - Define the Rough School Sketch

Give your school illustration a cleaner and more polished look by defining the sketch lines with a pen or marker. Carefully trace over the building sketch lines of your drawing. Be sure to follow the contours of each line as closely as possible, and use a steady hand to avoid wobbling or smudging.

Then, trace the sketch lines around the windows, door, and significant elements. Using an outline brush is helpful for making a double outline quickly.

Trace and define the rest of your smaller details. Once you have traced over all the pencil lines, use an eraser to remove any remaining sketches carefully. This will leave you with a clean line art drawing.

Step 3 - Apply Color to your Drawing

Swap your lining medium with a color one for our third and final step. You can use colored pencils or markers to add color to the entire drawing or apply your color palette to specific features like the door, windows, and sign.

Apply color to your school illustration
