How to Draw a Sheep

Create cute animals with this 4 step drawing guide on how to draw a sheep

In today's animal drawing guide, we show you how to draw a sheep. Sheep are among the most beloved farm animals, often symbolizing innocence, softness, and calmness. Use your animal illustration for a children's book, farm-themed artwork, or just for fun.

When learning how to draw farm animal clipart, you can use many mediums to bring your designs to life, from paint, crayons, and pastels to Procreate and DesignScape.

Step 1 - Create the Base Shape

With a sketching medium, create the base shape of your sheep. Use any light or soft tool, such as a pencil.

Sketch the Head and Body

For your first sketch, draw your sheep's head as a small rough circle.

Draw a circle for the sheep's head

Next, draw a large oval shape on the bottom of the sheep's head for the body. Your oval should be at least double the size of the head.

Sketch the sheep's body shape

Add Ears and Shape

Draw a boomerang shape for your sheep's ears on either side of the head. We drew our left ear slightly larger as our sheep's head will be at a slight side view (see our red sketch lines).

Next, draw a bump and shape the lower right side of your sheep face.

Add ears to the sheep and shape the face

Add the Legs

Add your sheep's four legs about three-fourths the height of the oval body. Draw a line with a slight backward bend for the back legs. The front two should have a curve.

Sketch lines where the sheep legs will go

Step 2 - Add Shape to your Sheep

Our second step we will add shape to the legs, wool, and face details. Continue using your sketching medium from the previous step.

Shape the Legs

Around your sheep's leg lines, add shape to them to thicken them out. Our example image below shows you how we added shapes in three sections.

Add the Wool

Using scalloped lines, add the wool around the head and body of your sheep. Keep the right side of the head, where we added shape, clear of a wool line.

Create a wool sketch around the sheep

Add Face Details

Inside the head, add the nose and mouth on the bottom right side and draw two eyes (see our blue sketches below). Then finalize the wool around the top of the head toward the left side.

Draw the sheep face details

Step 3 - Define your Sheep Sketch

With your sheep's rough sketch created, it is time to switch your sketching medium for an outlining one. You can use a pen or an inking brush to go over the lines you want to include in your line art.

Create the Main Outlines

First, to make your animal outline, carefully line the wool sketches. Create an original wool outline by adding a few scalloped bumps between the larger ones.

Define the wool lines of your sheep

Then, define the rest of the details. Clean up your drawing by erasing any remaining pencil marks.

Outline the sheep's face, ears and legs

Add Details

Add detail, such as a tail, ear lines, and eyebrows, to add character to your sheep drawing. Finally, add texture to the wooly coat with scalloped lines to create the look of fluffy fur on the head and body.

Create detailed lines on your sheep outline

Step 4 - Add Color to the Sheep Outline

Now that you have a defined outline, it's time to add some color to your sheep. If you need help deciding what colors to choose, create a color palette in Procreate or use your imagination.

Add color and shading to your sheep

You can even add blushed cheeks, shading and white details to the eyes and hooves for a cute animal illustration.

Great job, you have successfully drawn a sheep and added color to bring it to life. Display it in your home, create sublimated t-shirts to give as a gift, or post it on social media to show off your skills.
