Before we begin our camping illustration, we need to first gather our supplies. With our drawing tutorials, you have the flexibility to use any medium you have on hand. This can be pencils, paints, markers, or digital apps like Photoshop and Procreate.

Step 1 - Create the Base Shape of Your Tent

Using a sketching medium like a pencil, roughly draw the base shape of your tent. First, create the top outer shape by drawing a large curved line. From the center of the arch, sketch a curved line going down and leaning towards the right.

Your sketch should look like the side view of a pyramid, but more rounded. See our sketch below for a visual guide.

At the bottom, sketch straight lines between the curved lines to finish the base shape of your tent.

Step 2 - Sketch The Opening Of The Tent

In this step, we are going to add the door, outer frame, and protective flaps. To create the outer frame where the poles go through, mimic the top shape sketch in Step 1. Place the frame sketch lines higher at the top and more to the right of the middle line.

Roughly sketch the tent flaps, by drawing an upward-curving line on the left and right. For the font of our tent, we made our line curve higher up on the left as seen in the sketch below.

Sketch your tent door opening below the flap line on the left of your tent. You can make your tent door any shape, like an oval, circle, or square.

Step 3 - Add the Final Tent Details

For our final sketches, we are going to add a few more details to our tent. In our image below, we sketched a smaller protective covering at the very top Then, we created fabric loops, by drawing spaced lines, going from the frame to the base shape.

Add details to the tent frame

We want to add details inside the tent to make our design more three-dimensional. Inside the door, in the direction of your bottom lines, create the floor shape. Draw another line above it and on the front next to the door for a stripe design.

Step 4 - Create the Outlines of Your Tent

With our rough sketches done, we are going to switch to a more permanent medium to create our outlines. Outline the frame, fabric loops, and top protective flap. Pay close attention and only include the sketch lines you want to keep.

Then, outline the inner details and the bottom of your tent. When you are done outlining, you can go ahead and erase your rough sketches.

Step 5 - Add Color To Your Tent Drawing

In our final step, we are going to add color to our drawing. You have creative freedom here to add any color, texture, or pattern that you want. For our tent, we simply added three colors to the outside, with darker shades on the inside.

That’s it, in only a few steps you have created your own tent drawing. You can create different styles by changing the colors, textures, and patterns. Why not make other matching elements, like drawing flames for a campfire or trees to tell a story with your illustration?
