Step 1 - Create your Guide

In the first step of our tornado drawing, we need to create a guide. This guide will determine the width and height of our tornado. Grab any sketching medium and a ruler to draw a straight line from the top to the bottom of your drawing area in a “V” shape.

Step 2 - Sketch your Tornado

With your guide ready, it’s time to start sketching out the shape of your tornado. Using your sketching medium, draw the side shape of the tornado from the bottom of your guide to the desired height. In some areas, create movement by drawing bumps of varying sizes close to the guide.

Draw the sides of your tornado

Once you have the sides drawn, add curved lines to each indent, as we did in our example sketch below.

Divide your tornado into sections

Lastly, add swirling wind patterns and extra details such as debris. We drew a few short lines between each section for our wind pattern.

Step 3 - Define your Tornado Outline

Use a darker or more permanent medium like a pen or marker to add details to the funnel, wind patterns, and debris. This is where you can make your tornado line drawing come to life, so take your time and be creative with your lines.

For our tornado outline, we used an inking brush in Procreate and left gaps in our lines to create more movement.

When you have traced all your sketch lines, you can remove them if an erasable sketching medium was used.

Step 4 - Apply Color to your Drawing

The final step in drawing your tornado is to add color. You can use a variety of mediums for this step, including paint, markers, or digital tools like Procreate. Use shades of gray or black to add depth and texture to your drawing, or select bright colors to give drama and emphasis to the tornado's movement.

You can add streaks of highlights and dark colors to create even more movement and depth in your nature illustration.
