How to Draw a Trumpet

Unleash your musical talents and learn how to draw a trumpet with this drawing tutorial

Let's make music together by learning how to draw a trumpet. Today's drawing lesson will carefully guide you through the steps, from sketches to adding color to your trumpet illustration. Use your illustration on business cards, music-themed events, or patterned paper, or add it to your digital art collection.

How to draw a trumpet final result

To create your trumpet clipart, you will need a sketching tool, a lining tool, and a color medium. Our drawing tutorials cater to everyone, so you can follow along no matter what you have on hand or your skill level.

Step 1 - Create Sketches of your Trumpet

Draw your trumpet with a sketching medium, such as an erasable or light-colored medium.

Create the Main Shape

On the right side, draw a large narrow oval for the bell of your trumpet.

Draw an oval for the bell of your trumpet

From the oval, draw two long curving lines. Looking at our sketch below, the top line is slightly longer, with a short line on the left side. Our bottom line makes a "U" shape.

Add shape to your trumpet

Create the mouthpiece on the left end from the top line as we did. Next, draw a "U" curving line from the top on the right side for the tuning slide.

Then, draw another line inside to create a pipe shape that curves from the bottom and extends toward the mouthpiece.

Sketch the trumpet mouthpiece

Looking at our sketch shown in red, draw a long curved line from the left side to the right. Make a smaller line just above the curve on the left.

Sketch three equal-sized rectangles in the middle for the valves (shown in blue).

Sketch the trumpet valves and remaining pipes

Add the Details

Sketch the final details of your musical instrument drawing. As shown in blue below, we added finger buttons, curved lines to the pipes, and a straight line to the tuning slide on top of the three valves.

Shown in red, we sketched the pinky hook at the top, a valve saddle on the left, and a valve ring on the right.

Step 2 - Define your Trumpet Lines

Switch to a permanent medium for the second step. With this medium, you will trace your sketch lines to make a defined trumpet outline. There are many overlapping sketches, so pay close attention to what we outline first.

Make your first outline from the mouthpiece toward the tuning slide. For our outline, we used a monoline brush in Procreate.

Outline the trumpet mouthpiece pipe

Then carefully trace the outer sketch line of the bell and left pipe. The bottom continues to the left, leaving gaps where other pieces are sketched.

Outline the bell pipe of your trumpet

Outline the next couple of pieces, such as the pinky hooks, ring, and valve saddle.

Define the small trumpet details

Trace the remaining line drawings of the valves and pipes. Whenever you have completed your outline, erase your rough sketches.

Define the trumpet valves

Step 3 - Apply Color to the Trumpet

In our final drawing guide step, you will need a coloring medium. To add color to your trumpet drawing, you can use shades of gold or silver. Alternatively, use any color palette to color your drawing.

Add color to your trumpet drawing

We started with a gold base color for our drawing. Then, with a dark and light shade, we added lines to our music illustration to create dimension.
