Step 1 - Create Sketches of your Watermelon
With an erasable or light-colored medium, create rough sketches of your watermelon. We are first going to create the base shapes, then we are going to add the details like the seeds and stripes.
Create the Base Shapes
On one side of your drawing area, sketch a big oval for your whole watermelon shape. Our whole watermelon is at an angle, but you can change the angle to be horizontal too.
On the right side of our whole watermelon, sketch a half oval with a flat top side. Following the bottom curve, draw another line above to create the watermelon rind, as indicated in blue.
Add the Seeds and Striped Details
Let’s create the iconic stripes of a watermelon's skin on the whole shape. All you have to do is draw curved lines from one end to the other of your whole watermelon clipart. Use our image below for guidance when adding stripes.
Lastly, add a couple of small teardrop shapes inside your sliced shape for the seeds. Why not change your seeds to hearts to make valentines day clipart?
Step 2 - Create a Defined Outline of your Watermelon
For our second step, swap to a defining medium, like a marker or pen to create your watermelon outlines. If your base shapes overlap like ours, line your sliced shape first then the whole fruit outline.
Next, trace the detailed sketches to define your stripes, seeds, and rind on your line drawing. If there are any rough sketches visible you can erase them now or cover them up in our next step.
Step 3 - Add Color and Texture to your Watermelon
A watermelon has three main colors for the skin and inner flesh. For your color palette, you will need green, light yellow, and red shades. On your whole watermelon, color your stripes with two shades of green.
Add green to the bottom of your sliced watermelon cartoon drawing with light yellow as a thin line above it. Above the yellow line, add a light red stripe. Then fill the rest in with a darker shade of red.
This next part is optional if you want to add texture to your drawing. Using the linen brush from these Procreate texture brushes, we added depth and texture. You could also use a texture brush and the smudge tool to blend your colors.
