How to Draw an Igloo

In our beginner's drawing guide you can learn how to draw an igloo

In today’s beginner drawing tutorial, we will take you through the steps on how to draw an igloo. Create a fun art project to keep little ones busy during the winter season, or mix in some glitter and a snowman to create a winter drawing wonderland. With our drawing guide, you will be able to create your very own igloo in just four steps.

In this drawing lesson, you can use any art supplies you have on hand. This can include colored pencils, oil paints, crayons and chalk pastels to DesignScape and Procreate. Are you using Procreate to draw your igloo? We have all kinds of free Procreate brushes just perfect for this tutorial and future projects.

Step 1 - Create the Shape of your Igloo

Use a sketching medium to make rough sketches of your igloo clipart. If you don’t have a pencil on hand, you can use a light-colored medium, then cover it up when adding color.

Create the Main Igloo Shape

To create the main dome shape for your igloo, roughly sketch a half circle with a straight line at the bottom. You can use circular items around your house to trace the half circle. A ruler or something straight can be used to draw the line at the bottom.

Add Your Igloo Door

Let’s add the entrance to our igloo by sketching a three-dimensional door. On the right side of your main shape, draw an arch as we did in our image below.

Sketch an entrance to your igloo

Then, add dimension by extending the arched shape to the left of the original arch. In the center of your main arch, create a smaller arch extending from the left. Sketch a line from this inner shape to the bottom corner of the first arch. See our sketch below.

Step 2 - Add Block Lines to Your Igloo

Create the ice block lines on your main dome and on the door. To create the blocks, start by drawing horizontal lines across your main shape. Then, between the horizontal lines, in different areas, add vertical lines.

Step 3 - Outline your Igloo Sketch

Trace over your sketch lines with a lining medium to create a permanent outline. Start tracing over your main dome shape and the door. Make sure not to line the bottom of the dome shape where the door is.

Next, outline the ice blocks and leave gaps in random places to give the igloo a unique look.

Step 4 - Add Color to your Igloo Drawing

Switch to your coloring medium and begin adding color. For your igloo, we would recommend using different shades of blue. But if you don’t have a variety of blues, go ahead and use the colors you have available.

We use these Procreate texture brushes when adding our color. Gradually add different shades of blue to build up the layers. Create dark lines between the ice blocks and lighter areas in the centers.
