How to Draw an Umbrella
It's sunshine and fun as you learn how to draw an umbrella
With today’s easy-to-follow guide, you can learn how to draw an umbrella. This handy invention provides protection from the rain and sun while adding style to any outfit with patterns and prints. You can use your umbrella clipart for fun flower projects, logos, color-by-number activity sheets, and personalized sublimated keychains.
For this easy drawing guide, you can use any painting and drawing mediums like poster paint, markers, and crayons. You could even use digital drawing programs on your computer or tablet.
If you are following along with Procreate, check out the great collection of Procreate brushes to sketch, outline, and color your umbrella illustration.
Step 1 - Create Rough Sketches of your Umbrella
Begin your drawing with a sketching medium to make a rough umbrella sketch. You are first going to create sketches for the top dome shape, and then the handle. Use any light-colored or pencil medium to make your rough sketches.
Sketch the Umbrella Top
In the top half of your drawing area, roughly sketch half an oval shape with a straight line at the bottom. This will create the domed top of the design.
Divide the umbrella top into sections by drawing three lines. Draw one in the center, and two curved lines closer to the edge. See our example below as a guide.
Next, at the top of your dome, draw a thin vertical rectangle for the metal rod you often see on umbrellas. At the bottom of each section, draw shallow inward curved lines to create the bottom edge shape.
Draw the Handle
Below your umbrella dome, create the handle. Begin by drawing a long thin rectangle, roughly the same height as your dome. Then, at the end create a hook-like shape for the handle. You can change the hook shape to anything to create a unique illustration.
Step 2 - Outline the Rough Umbrella Sketch
Create an umbrella outline by tracing your sketch lines. You can use any dark or permanent mediums to make the outlines. Begin tracing the top, but avoid tracing the bottom sketch line of the dome shape.
Continue outlining the handle and when you are done, remove the sketch medium. If you can’t remove the sketch, you can cover it up with color.
Step 3 - Add Color to your Umbrella
For the final step in our drawing lesson, we are going to add color and patterns. Begin by filling the umbrella outlines with your chosen colors.
We used two shades of yellow to color our top sections. You could even make each section a different color.
Why not add a pattern to the top shape? We added some fun spots using this Procreate texture brush set. In the brush set, you can find all kinds of patterns to use with your illustrations.
