To follow this tutorial, you are going to need a sketching, lining, and color medium. You can even use Procreate, like we are, to draw the flower illustration. During the tutorial, we will also be using these Procreate brushes.

Step 1 - Roughly Sketch the Shape Guides

We need to sketch shape guides before drawing the petals. Using a sketching medium like a pencil, draw five rough circle shapes inside each other. These will act as sizing guides and placement for each row of petals.

Step 2 - Sketch the Petals of the Marigold

In this step, we are going to sketch the rows of petals for our marigold. Our marigold petals will have an organic shape to them, meaning they have many curves. You can add more structure to your petal shapes if you wish.

Create the Center Cluster of Petals

Starting in the center of your guide, roughly sketch a small center shape of your marigold. Continuing in the first circle guide, sketch the second row of four petals.

Sketch the center of your marigold

Next, sketch two more rows of petals in the second circle section. Place these petals randomly using different sizes. We created different petal sizes with spacing between them.

Create the Bigger Outer Petals

With the inner cluster of petals sketched, we are going to start adding bigger petals. Sketch another two rows of petals in the third and fourth circle guide sections.

We drew big and small petals, with the larger petals reaching the end of the circle section.

We added an extra two rows of petals, with the last row forming a circular shape for our marigold.

Step 3 - Outline the Rough Marigold Sketch

In this step, permanently outline your entire marigold sketch with a marker or pen. Leave out the circle guides and only outline the petals, then remove the rough sketches.

Step 4 - Add Color and Shading to your Marigold

With our sketches complete, let's add color and some shading. For our color palette, we chose a red shade for the main petal color and yellow/gold to color the edges of our petals

Add the Base Color

Add your base color first to your marigold sketch.

Add Shading to the Petals

For the shading, use three shades darker than your base color. Build up the shading with the lightest color first and the darkest color last.

Shading was added in different areas where a shadow would be present. We then layered our darker shades to add depth.

Add darker colors to shade your petals

Finally, add small amounts of the darkest shade in the center petal areas.

Apply darker shading to your marigold petals

Line the inner edges of each petal with golden yellow. Complete your design with small dots in the center of your flower.
