The ancient Egyptians worshipped a large pantheon of gods and goddesses, with over 1500 deities known by name. These gods and goddesses were believed to control various aspects of the environment and human life, and were an integral part of ancient Egyptian religion. The characteristics of individual gods could be hard to pin down, and most had a principle association, such as with the sun or the underworld. Some of the most famous ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses:
- **Amun**: The creator god
- **Ra (Atum)**: The god of the sun
- **Osiris**: The god of justice and the underworld
- **Isis**: The goddess of motherhood
- **Hathor**: The goddess of drunkenness and love
- **Ma'at**: The goddess of balance and order
- **Horus**: The god of the sky and kingship]
- **Anubis**: The god of death and mummification
Other important deities include Seth, Ptah, Nut, and Thoth. The physical form taken on by the various Egyptian gods was usually a combination of human and animal, and many were associated with one or more animals
