Satanism is a group of ideological and philosophical beliefs based on Satan. It has several historical precedents, but the contemporary religious practice of Satanism began with the founding of the atheistic Church of Satan by Anton LaVey in the United States in 1966. Prior to that time, Satanism existed primarily as the subject of accusations by various Christian groups toward perceived ideological opponents rather than a self-identity or expressed religious belief. There are different forms of Satanism, including:
- **Theistic Satanism**: This is a form of Satanism with a belief in Satan as a deity, often involving the practice of magic and ritual.
- **Non-theistic Satanism**: This is a form of Satanism that does not involve a belief in Satan as a deity, but rather uses Satan as a symbol of individualism, free will, and rebellion against authority.
The Satanic Temple is a non-theistic Satanic organization that encourages benevolence and empathy, rejects tyrannical authority, advocates practical common sense, opposes injustice, and undertakes. They have filed lawsuits in Indiana and Idaho to protect their members' access to abortion. The Satanic Temple's mission is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people.
Male youths from abusive family environments may be particularly vulnerable to recruitment into satanic cults. These youths may use satanic involvement as a means of legitimizing their experience and differentiating from a negatively enmeshed and/or abusive family system. However, even for most adolescents who may fit this description, Satanism remains a bizarre and frightening prospect.
There are different types of involvement in satanic beliefs and rituals, and their association with various criminal behaviors. The religious Satanists, such as the Church of Satan, Church of Satanic Liberation, and the Temple of Set, provide a context for groups to participate in traditional satanic rituals. A "self-styled Satanist" is a sociopath, psychopath, or drug addict who justifies criminal acts through a belief system centered in Satan. Groups in this category include outlaw motorcycle gangs, extremist groups, drug-dealing organizations, prison inmates, and serial killers. A "satanic cult" is a relatively cohesive group of persons, akin to "self-styled Satanists," who subscribe to the perpetration of evil in a variety of ways. These cults are often composed of persons with severe mental and behavioral problems.
