Your dandelion clipart will be a perfect fit for all projects. With its versatility, you can also create your illustration working with any art medium or digital app you are familiar with. Use crayons, colored pens, paint, or Procreate.

If you are using Procreate like we are, we have a great selection of free Procreate brushes you can use with this drawing guide. These brushes will also work great with other spring flower illustrations from our tutorials on how to draw a daisy or draw a tulip.

Step 1 - Create a Dandelion Sketch

For the first step in our drawing tutorial, you will need a medium that you can either erase or cover up when outlining or adding color. This can be anything from an HB pencil or a light-colored sketching tool.

Draw the Stem

In the center of your drawing area, sketch a small circle for the seed head. Draw two curving lines at the bottom of the circle to create the dandelion stem (shown in blue in our image below).

Create the Blowball

Next, we are going to create the dandelion blowball. Start drawing varying-sized lines going around the circle that a slightly curved. You can also add a couple of lines blowing away from the center.

Sketch the dandelion blowball lines

On the bottom of the lines, add thickness to represent the dandelion seed (shown in red). Then, at the top, create a cluster of fine lines called the pappus. These lines should be short and angled in all directions. See our example image below.

Step 2 - Permanently Line your Sketch

Darken and make your sketch lines permanent with a lining medium. You will need an inking brush, pen, or black marker to create your dandelion outline. An ink or calligraphy-style brush works perfectly to create unique line art with varying line thicknesses.

Trace over your rough sketch to define your drawing. Then, fill in any empty spaces around the blowball center to make it look complete. Feel free to add any extra textures or details to your dandelion, such as drawing leaves or grass around the stem.

Step 3 - Apply Color to your Dandelion

For our third and final step, you will need to switch your lining tool for your color mediums. Apply color to your dandelion drawing using any color combination you want. You can also use one of these handy ready-made color palettes in our collection to add shadows and highlights to your artwork.
