Step 1 - Create the Sword Guides

Let's get started with making two simple guides to help with the overall shape of the sword. Use a light and easily erasable medium like a graphite or charcoal pencil to make rough sketches. If you do not have any on hand, use a light color of your chosen medium that you can easily cover-up.

For the first guide, sketch a long rectangle to determine the length and width of the blade of your sword.

Draw the blade guide of your sword

Then draw a small narrow rectangle on one of the short sides with a triangle to build the guide for the handle.

Sketch the guide of your sword handle

Step 2 - Shape your Sword

With your guides drawn, it's time to add shape to the blade and handle of your sword illustration using your sketching medium. Start drawing on the blade guide, and create a slightly curved line from the hand side to the center of the opposite end. See our example image below.

Add shape to the blade of your sword

Next, shape the handle of your sword. You can shape the handle any way you want by using basic shapes and adding curved lines.

For our weapon handle, we added a circle over the end of the triangle and created curves at the base before the blade started.

Step 3 - Darken your Sword Sketches

Once you are done with the rough sketch of your sword, it's time to make your sketch lines a little more permanent. With a fine-tip pen, marker, or ink Procreate brush, begin tracing over the lines you have drawn, making sure to darken all the details you want to keep.

Outline your sword shape lines

Add extra sword outlines such as lines on the blade, swirl designs on the handle, or create a sword sheath.

Define extra outlines and designs on your sword

Using a variety of mediums, such as watercolors, colored pencils, or markers, apply color to your sword clipart. If you need help deciding what colors to use, check out our collection of metallic color palettes to add shades of silver, gold, or rose gold.
