Step 1 - Make Sketches of your Blueberries

Starting with rough sketches we are going to draw our berries and some leaves. For your sketches, you can use a pencil or medium that is light in color for this drawing lesson.

Create your Blueberry Shape

On the bottom half of your drawing area, roughly sketch a circle for your blueberry shape. Next to your circle, add another round shape but in a different size. For our drawing lesson, we are drawing two blueberries.

Add the Leaves

Above your blueberry sketch, add a few leaves. Draw your leaves as long pointed shapes in different sizes. We added four leaves, with some overlapping the berry drawing.

Add the Calyx

For your final sketch, you are going to add the calyx. The calyx is the wavy edge at the bottom of a blueberry. To create the calyx shape, draw a small circular or oval shape with wavy and jagged edges.

Step 2 - Outline your Rough Blueberries Sketch

Begin tracing over your sketch lines with an outlining medium. Pay close attention to your overlapping sketches and only keep the sketch lines you want to make permanent.

We first started outlining the leaves and made sure to keep the areas that we wanted skipping anything that overlapped.

Then, outline your berries and calyx sketch lines. On our right blueberry, we used an angled view with the calyx on the right edge. We outline the calyx first, then the berry to create a seamless outline.

If you used a removable sketch medium, you can go ahead and remove it to clean up your drawing for the next step.

Step 3 - Add Color to Your Blueberries

In the last step, we are going to add color to our blueberry illustration. You will need green, and two shades of blue for your base colors. If you plan on adding shading, as we did, you will need shades that are darker than your base colors.

Using any shade of green, color in your leaves. Then, using blue, apply color to your blueberries and add a darker shade of blue inside the calyx.

Apply your blueberries base color

We are going to add depth using darker shades from the base color of our blueberries and leaves. We used a Texture Procreate brush to add shading to all of our leaves and blueberries.

By lowering your brush opacity and applying your color in layers, you can gradually shade in your design using Procreate. Learn more on how to shade in Procreate using blur, layers, and creating a drop shadow.
