Human Rights Day is observed each year on 10 December - the date on which the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1948. Human rights are an important part of our lives. The principles enshrined in the Declaration are still relevant today as they were in 1948. We have a responsibility to protect both our own rights and those of others. By upholding the rights that protect us all, we can promote our kinship as human beings. UNESCO was the first United Nations agency to promote the Universal Declaration throughout the world through education and the media as early as December 1948.
