How to convert a PNG or JPG to SVG

  1. Choose your image. Pick, drop or paste a PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or BMP. Bold shapes with clear edges convert best: logos, silhouettes, lettering and clipart. The image stays on your device.
  2. Pick cut file or colour layers. A cut file traces the dark (or non-transparent) part of the image into one solid shape, holes included, ready to cut. Colour layers split the image into 2 to 8 colours, one layer each, for print then cut or layered vinyl.
  3. Set the detail and size. Smooth gives fewer points and cleaner cuts. Detailed keeps thin lines and small gaps. Pick the cut width in inches, and for a cut file, move the light and dark cut-off if part of the design is missing. The preview updates as you go.
  4. Download and upload to Design Space. Download the SVG and upload it to Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio (Designer Edition), or any app that opens SVG files.

PNG to SVG questions

How do I convert a PNG to SVG for Cricut?
Choose your PNG above, keep Cut file selected, pick the width you want to cut, and download the SVG. In Cricut Design Space choose Upload, then Upload Image, and select the SVG. It opens as one cut layer at the width you chose.
Can Cricut Design Space convert a PNG to SVG?
Design Space can upload a PNG or JPG and cut around it, but it cannot save the result as an SVG, and you clean up the background by hand. Converting to SVG first gives you a vector file that stays sharp at any size, opens in Silhouette Studio too, and keeps its holes and layers.
Why does my SVG look jagged or blocky?
Usually the image is small. This converter enlarges small images before tracing and draws curves, but it cannot add detail the image never had, so start from the largest copy you have. Smooth detail gives cleaner cuts; Detailed keeps thin lines.
Is the PNG to SVG converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many images you convert. The conversion runs in your browser, so your image is never uploaded to our servers.
Will my SVG work in Cricut Design Space?
Yes. Cut file mode makes one solid black shape with its holes kept open, which Design Space uploads as a single cut layer. Colour layer mode makes one shape per colour, which Design Space shows as separate layers you can cut from different vinyl.
Why does my photo not convert well?
Tracing turns areas of flat colour into shapes, so photos with soft shading come out blotchy. For the best result use an image with a plain background, strong contrast and few colours. Try Colour layers with 3 or 4 colours, or edit the image to a black silhouette first.
What size will my SVG be in Design Space?
The width you pick under Cut width, from 2 to 11.5 inches, with the height kept in proportion. You can still resize it in Design Space, and because it is a vector it stays sharp.
Can I sell what I make from a converted image?
Only if you own the image or its licence allows it. Converting a picture to SVG does not change who owns it, so a logo, character or someone else’s artwork stays theirs. Design Bundles SVGs come with a licence that covers selling what you make, depending on your plan.
