Layering Designs in Photoshop Using a Clipping Mask

This tutorial will walk you through overlaying an image over another - in this case applying a 'gold foil' design over a logo design. In technical terms this is known as a clipping mask.

Open a PSD designs in Photoshop, with a transparent background - this could also be a PNG image, EPS, AI file etc:-

Select all of the relevant layers aside from background layer (if there is one):-

Press Ctrl-G/Cmd-G, or go to Layer > Group Layers.

They should now appear in a layer group as follows:-

Next, copy and paste the following gold foil design into your document:-

Scale and resize the gold foil design until it covers the whole logo:-

Whilst resizing, you may wish to change the interpolation to Nearest Neighbour at the top:-

Next, right click the gold foil layer:-

And locate 'Create clipping mask':-

This will now apply the gold layer style to your design:-
