How to Mirror in Procreate

Knowing how to mirror in Procreate is a very useful bit of knowledge to have. Mirroring reflects your design on the opposite side. This can be done with purchased images or your own drawing. In this tutorial we are going to show you how to mirror using two techniques.

During this tutorial we will be using this unicorn svg bundle with a monogram design but we have tons of brilliant Unicorn SVGs to choose from.

Method 1 - Flip your Design in Procreate

The first method is the quickest and easiest way to mirror your design. This works best with purchased or completed designs.

Step 1 - Create or Import your Design

For this step we will be importing our ready made design. If you want to make your own design, create a new canvas in Procreate. Our canvas dimensions are 2300 x 3000 px.

Next, tap on the wrench tool or Actions menu. Then, tap on Insert a File. Locate where your file is stored and tap to open.

Once the image is open, you will see that the Selection tool (arrow at the top) becomes active.

With Uniform selected, you can tap + drag a corner node inward to make the image smaller. We also shifted our image over to the right since the horse is facing left.

Step 2 - Mirror the Image in Procreate

Go to the Layers Panel then swipe the image layer to the left. Next, tap on Duplicate to create a duplicate layer. Using the Selections tool, make sure Uniform is selected. Tap on Flip Vertical.

You can flip vertically or horizontally. Now, tap on the Snapping icon and make sure Snapping is turned on. This will help with positioning.

Move this flipped image to the left side. You will see guidelines appear to help place the image. Reposition the image however you want or follow our image below.

Once done, tap on the Selections menu to deselect. Now would be a good time to merge your layers if needed.

Method 2 - Mirror with the Symmetry Tool

The second method is great for work in progress. The Symmetry tool mirrors while you are drawing with horizontal lines and vertical lines. This is especially helpful in creating mandalas or drawing faces. For this method we chose a canvas size of 2500 x 2500 px.

Step 1 - Set up Symmetry Guide

To set up the Symmetry Guide, tap on the Actions icon (wrench tool). Tap on the Drawing Guide slider so it shows blue. Then, tap on Edit Drawing Guide.

Add drawing guides in Procreate

The Drawing Guide menu will appear at the bottom. Tap on Symmetry. You will see one line through the middle of the canvas.

The color can be adjusted by moving the circular slider at the top. The Opacity and Thickness can be edited if needed. Click Done top right.

Change Symmetry line color

Step 2 - Draw Design using Symmetry

Choose a side to begin drawing. We chose the right side. As you draw, everything will be mirrored or copied on the opposite side of the line.

Once complete you can fill with color or paint the color in.
