How to Fill in Shapes with SCAL4 to use with the Foil Quill

- Open SCAL4 To access a shape to fill in you can either import a SVG, you can use the library  pop up box or you can click on the library icon.

- Insert your shape in your design area.

- Resize your shape so it is quite large. By making the design larger you can add your fill likes then decrease size after. this way you can see exactly where the lines are within your design.

- With the shape selected, go to the effect dropdown list and select line fill.

- A little pop up window will appear. This is where you add your fill lines. In the first box you can adjust the line spacing. I recommend to start with 0.050 then click the preview icon to see if the gap between lines is what you need.

- As you can see the lines have a small gap. if your using the thicker quill tool I would recommend this but if using the fine you can go with a smaller line spacing. Once you are happy click OK.

- With SCAL4 you cannot manually change the angle of the lines within your design. But the lines are locked horizontal, so the work around is to rotate your design to the angle you want them to be.

- Once you have the angle you want, with the shape selected go to path - object to path.

- Now rotate your design back to the correct angle. You will now see that the lines will stay where they were when you rotate your design back.

- You can also crosshatch line fill. go to the line fill option again. Adjust your line fill to the width you want. Then in the cross hatch option click so there is one crosshatch. You can add more than one crosshatch, but I like the single one.

- When you hare satisfied with the fill, click OK.

- As you can see here, the crosshatch does fill the shape quite well.

- Now we need to export the design as a SVG file to use in your cutting program. Click on file- Export.

- Save as a SVG file.

- Lastly a final pop up box will appear. I usually set to 73dpi. If you are going to use cricut design space to cut make sure you check the design space compatible icon also.

- If using a silhouette you can cut directly from SCAL4 to your machine. With Cricut design space and Brother scan n cut machine, you can import your saved SVG file and cut using the software related to the cutter.
