How to Use Scene Creators in DesignScape
Learn how to use scene creators in DesignScape to make your own mockups, and blog post templates.
Did you know that you can use Scene Creators in DesignScape? Scene Creators are composed of individual elements that you can adjust to create multiple scene mockups. In DesignScape, an online based editing program, each element becomes an editable Smart Object. While DesignScape is available to Gold Plus Members, we do have a free 30 day trial for you to try out the Gold Plus Membership and DesignScape.
DesignScape is an excellent editing alternative to Photoshop and Illustrator. There is no need to download any software, you can get started with your projects immediately.
To create our scene, we are using this school stationary scene creator and a floral flat lay template as our background. For the text, we are using a bold brush font called Amora Brush.
You are also welcome to browse through our excellent selection of mockup scene creators for other choices.
Step 1 - Create your Scene
Included with the Scene Creator are two PSD files filled with elements. We want to keep the original files intact so we will be using copy and paste to create the scene. Let’s begin by opening the files in DesignScape.
We opened the two PSD files containing the elements and the floral background.
Select Multiple Layers
You will find each element on its own Smart Object layer under the Layers Panel on the right side. Now, you can select multiple items on one PSD file and copy them at once. To do this, select an item’s layer, then hold Ctrl + click on additional layers to select them.
Next, go to Edit > Copy or Ctrl + C.
Paste Layers onto Background
Click back on the floral background file, go to Edit > Paste or Ctrl + V. Depending on the size of your background, you may notice that some elements are off the canvas. Not to worry, under the Layers Panel, just select your layers then click on the Move Tool top left toolbar.
In the top toolbar, tick the box for Transform controls then click + drag your elements back onto the background.
You can use the Move Tool to reposition and resize the elements. To resize, click + drag a corner node in or out.
Copy the rest of your selected elements to the background. Here are the items we decided to add to our scene. You can add or delete as many items as needed.
Adjust Size and Position of Elements
You can now resize and rearrange your selected elements however you want. Use the Move Tool and be sure to select a layer before editing that element. You may need to adjust the order of the layers if you want certain items above others.
To do this, click + drag the layer up or down to change the order. Here we wanted the notebook beneath the pen and cap layers.
When adjusting the size, to keep the proportion hold Shift while clicking + dragging a corner node in or out. At the top toolbar you can click on the Tick icon to accept the changes or just click on another layer.
Edit Smart Objects if Needed
You can edit the Smart Objects by double clicking on the element’s layer. A new window will open where you can edit the element further. Any adjustments made here, such as changing color, adding another element and so on, will only apply to this layer.
For a bit of fun we copied the paper clip elements from the Scene Creator files over to the Alarm Clock. To see the adjustments you will need to go to File > Save (Smart Object).
Then, click back on the floral background layer and you will see that the element has been updated. Each time you want to edit the Smart Object, double click to open if not open already, make your edits then save to update.
Change Direction of Shadows
If you take a closer look you will notice the lighting for the elements is different to the sunflower. Since we can’t change the direction of lighting on the sunflower, we need to do this on the elements. Luckily, each element has a customizable drop shadow.
Next to each layer is an eff icon. Click on this then double click on the Effect option to open the Layer Style Panel. Alternatively, just double click on the eff icon for quicker access. Now adjust the Angle and Opacity as needed.
Do this for all elements that require it or where you want to adjust the shadow.
Step 2 - Add your Text Object
Let us add a bit of text to our scene. We have already uploaded the font that we want to use in DesignScape. We also have a great in-depth tutorial on text basics in DesignScape to help you get started.
Using the Text Tool on the left side toolbar, type out your text then change the font. Remember to click the Tick icon on the top toolbar to Confirm.
We changed the color and used the Move Tool to resize and reposition the text object.
For our final touch we created an offset stroke for the text. We can then save this as a PSD file so we can always edit it. Do this by going to File > Save as PSD then give the file a name and choose a location to save to.
