How to Create a Transparent Gradient in Illustrator

Learn how to create a transparent gradient in Adobe Illustrator with this step by step tutorial.

In this tutorial, we will be creating a transparent gradient. We also have a guide on how to fill text with a gradient if you’re interested. You can apply this to images, vector drawings and also grouped objects. Adding gradients to your designs and illustrations can add depth. You will also learn how to add a shiny, metallic look to give your design that premium finish!

We areg oing to use a home sweet home SVG as an example for this tutorial.

Step 1 - Open Gradient and Transparency Panels

We will be working with two main panels, these are the Gradient and Transparency panels. Start by selecting Window > Gradient.

Open gradient panel

Next, we want to open the Transparency panel. Click on Window > Transparency.

Open transparency panel

Step 2 - Add rectangle and apply Gradient

We will be adding a rectangle to use with a gradient. First, we need to ensure all design elements are grouped together. Highlight all of your design elements, then select Object > Group.

Next, select your rectangle tool from your left toolbar and draw a rectangle over your whole design.

Draw a rectangle

With your rectangle selected, select the gradient within the Gradient panel.

Apply gradient to shape

You can also select the drop down menu beside it to ensure you use a white to black gradient.

Add black to white gradient

Step 3 - Apply Layer Mask to Gradient

We want to apply a Layer Mask to our Gradient. With your rectangle selected, choose Edit > Cut.

Cut element from design

Then, select your design and click Make Mask in your Transparency panel.

Select your mask layer from within the Transparency panel.

Select mask layer

We will now paste the gradient rectangle into here by selecting Edit > Paste.

Paste gradient into mask

Step 4 - Edit your Gradient

The white area of the gradient will reveal more of your design than the black area. This can also be adjusted by selecting the gradient tool from your left toolbar. When selected, a bar will appear across your design.

Edit your gradient

You can then drag the black and white circles to adjust where these colors start. This will change the visibility of your design. You can then adjust the depth of the gradient using the square in the center.

Move the nodes to edit gradient

You can also change the angle of your gradient from the gradient panel. We have added a 45 degree angle.

Add angle to gradient

Hover your mouse over the line until a + appears. You will be able to add more color points. You can then click and drag these points along the line to change the gradient effects. We have added another white point at the other end. The result gives the design a shiny or metallic look.

Add extra nodes to gradient
