Whether you have an adventurous or sassy style, there is something for everyone in our collection of bold script fonts.
Materials Required for this Project
Design - We are using the Timberly font
Cricut cutting machine - We are using a Cricut Maker
Fine Point Blade
Cardstock - 30x30cm in two shades of blue 185gsm, one A4 glitter cardstock 250gsm, but you can use any cardstock you like
You can also double up on the cardstock for a thicker design or mirror the duplicates for a front and back view
Double sided tape, or glue
Cake pop stick or a wooden skewer
Glue gun
Step 1 - Create the Main Design in Cricut Design Space
Let's begin by creating a new project in Cricut Design Space. On the left side toolbar, click on the Text tool and begin typing your text. Next, change the font to your chosen style for your cake topper.
We are creating a 40th Birthday cake topper with two rows of wording. This text object will be separated so that we can edit the letters however we choose. Resize the text to fit your design by using the sizing handles on the corners or the Size adjustment at the top toolbar.
Ungroup the Text Object
In order for us to be able to manipulate the text, it first needs to be ungrouped. Select the text object, right click < Ungroup. You can also click the Ungroup button at the top of the Layers Panel on the right-hand side of the screen.
Some of the letters have gaps between them. These needed to be shifted closer to the other letters so that they can be welded together as a single object. In the image below, we shifted the letters “H” and “B” and the number “4”.
Group Selected Words
Edit the letters until you are happy with the result. Now, to make this much easier, we need to group the words in order to easily shift them around. Select all of the letters for “Happy”, right click > Group. Repeat this process for the rest of the design “Birthday” and “40th”
Arrange the Design for the Cake Topper
A cake topper needs to be cut as one single piece, We need to rearrange the text so that it overlaps. Experiment with ideas here on how you want your cake topper to look. You do need to make certain that the grouped objects overlap.
You are welcome to follow our design below. Take a look at the overlapping areas in the image below. It's important to link all the pieces together successfully so that it cuts as a single object.
You can keep editing and adjusting until everything looks the way you want it to. When ready, select the entire design and click on the Combine button bottom right corner. Next, click on Weld to create a single object design.
Step 2 - Create the Offsets for your Cricut Cake Topper
A layered cake topper provides more stability, and can add dimension and make your design stand out more. It’s easy enough to do and requires that you create an offset of the design.
For this Happy Birthday cake topper, we are using three colors of cardstock. So we will need two offsets to make three layers. The amount of layers is up to you but around three to four layers in total is a good start. The first offset was created with a distance of 0.4cm.
At this point you can add color to your layers with the Color Swatch in the top left toolbar. This will also make it easier to identify which cardstock to cut next.
Make sure to select the first offset before adding the second one. We used 0.4cm once again for the distance as this will be the main base for our design. If there are gaps in the offset design that you want to remove, we’ll show you how to do this next.
Remove Unwanted Areas with the Contour Tool
After you have applied the offset, there may be gaps that you don’t want cut out. To fix this, make sure the offset with these gaps has been selected. For this example, we will remove a gap on the second offset that we created. Click on the Contour button located at the bottom right corner.
In the window, locate the areas that you want removed and click on each one. The Contour tool is a fantastic feature in Design Space. We love it so much that we put together a tutorial on how to hide sections of your design using this awesome tool.
Below is the result of after removing the gaps with the Contour tool in both offsets.
You can remove or leave gaps in the design, it’s entirely up to you. We chose to remove the gaps in the first offset but keep them in the second offset.
Step 3 - Cut and Assemble the Cake Topper
After you have completed your design, it’s time to cut and put everything together! Click on the Make It button in the top right-hand-corner. Click Continue on the bottom right of the mat window to open the Material settings.
We selected Cardstock (for intricate cuts) as this setting works exceptionally well when cutting cardstock.
You can locate the setting under Browse all materials. Follow the on-screen instructions and cut your design out.
For the thicker glitter cardstock (250gsm), we needed to use more pressure. If you find that the cardstock has not cut through, DON’T unload your mat. Press the “C” button on your machine to cut again. This assures that the machine cuts in the same place.
Carefully remove the cut pieces from your mat. Now we can assemble the layered birthday cake topper.
Add double sided tape or a glue of your choice to the top, light blue layer.
Place this on top of the second, glitter cardstock layer. Repeat this for all of your layers until you have one solid piece.
Get your heat gun ready and apply hot glue (careful not to burn yourself) to the back of the skewer. Attach this to the back of the cake topper and you are finally done!
