You can use purchased glitter backgrounds if you prefer them ready made. These can then be applied to the text using clipping masks.
For our text we will use a vintage script font called Montheim. We have already imported our font into DesignScape.
Step 1 - Create the Glitter Pattern
Begin by starting a new project with the dimensions 1500 x 1000 px. Next, we are going to be creating a Glitter Pattern. By creating a pattern and adding it to the library, you can use it for other projects as well.
Fill the Layer with Gray
When you open DesignScape, a new layer is created under the Layers Panel on the right. With this layer selected, go to Edit > Fill. In the Fill options, select Gray then click OK.
The entire layer will fill with Gray.
Add a Noise Filter
To start building up the pattern, we need to add a Noise Filter. At the top menu bar, go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise. In the settings window, input an amount of 80%. Leave Distribution as Uniform and tick the box for Monochromatic. Then click OK.
Apply Crystallize Filter
Glitter can be different shapes and sizes so we will add a Crystallize Filter. Click on Filter > Pixelate > Crystallize to add the filter. The size of the cells will depend on personal reference but for this project, a value of 4 to 6 px is a good starting point.
Save the Glitter Pattern
It might not look like much right now, but saving as black and white will allow us to add any color we want. Next, we want to save it to the DesignScape pattern library. Go to Edit > Define New > Pattern. DesignScape will notify you that the pattern has been added.
Step 2 - Create the Glitter Text
Again, create a new document with the dimensions 1500 x 1000. We set the DPI to 300 for our Glitter Text Effect. Here we will use the Text Tool then add the pattern effect to our text.
Use the Text Tool
On the left side panel select the Text Tool then type out your text. Remember to change your font. We have a detailed tutorial on text basics in DesignScape if needed. Choose a color of your choice by clicking on the Color Picker top toolbar. We used HEX #fcc652 for a gold color.
Duplicate the Text Layer
Now, right click the Text layer in the Layers Panel and select Duplicate Layer. Double click on the layer name and rename to Text Layer Style. At the top of the Layers Panel, change the fill of the layer to 0%. This will allow us to see the text below. We will be applying an effect to this later on.
Add a Pattern Overlay
Click back on the original Text layer to select it. Go to the bottom of the Layers Panel and click on the eff icon. Now select Pattern Overlay.
In the Layer Style Panel, you will see that Pattern Overlay is ticked. In the options, change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. You can experiment until you are happy with the result.
Next, click on the drop down box for the Pattern and scroll down to the last pattern. This should be the one you saved to the Library.
The Opacity was adjusted to 40% and the pattern Scale changed to 20%. Off X and Off Y were set to 0 px. Then click OK.
You can adjust the settings as needed to find what works best for you. If you want to change the settings, just click on the eff icon on the selected layer.
Step 3 - Add Some Layer Styles for Effect
We want to make our text pop a little more by adding some Layer Styles.
Apply a Bevel and Emboss Effect
Be sure to select the Text Layer Style layer (top most layer) under the Layers Panel. Click on the eff icon at the bottom and select Bevel and Emboss. The Layer Style Panel will open.
We used the following settings for our project:
Style: Inner Bevel
Technique: Smooth - second selection: Up
Depth: 500%
Size: 15 px
Soften: 0 px
Angle top number (Angle): 80
Angle bottom number (Altitude): 60
Untick box for Use global angle
Contour: Linear
First Mode (Highlight): Linear Light, White
Opacity: 75%
Second Mode (Shadows): Multiply, Black
Opacity: 0%
Keep this panel open for the next Layer Style.
Change the Background Color
Let us quickly change the background to give more impact. Click on the Background layer, which should be the bottom most layer. Click on the eff icon > Color Overlay then select Black from the Color Picker box if needed. Click OK to close out of the Panel.
Add Outer Glow (Optional)
If you want, you can also add an Outer Glow to your text. Do this by selecting the Text Layer Style layer, then double clicking on the eff icon on the layer. With the Layers Style Panel you can add styles from here.
Make sure the Outer Glow option is ticked and use the following settings:
Blend Mode: Screen
Opacity: 38%
Noise and Gradient settings left as is
Technique: Softer
Spread: 23%
Size: 15 px
Contour: Linear
Range: 100%
Jitter: 0%
Step 4 - Edit Glitter Text Effect if Needed
Since we used non-destructive layers, you can go back and edit anytime you want. For example, let’s make the text a darker gold. Select the second Text layer then click on the Text Tool. At the top toolbar click on the Color Picker box. We used the color #ebb134.
You can also adjust the Pattern Overlay to make the “glitter” bigger. Double click the eff on the second Text layer. Make sure to click on Pattern Overlay to access the editing options. Then increase the Scale.
The final step is to save your file. You can save a PSD to edit later by going to File > Save as PSD. You can also save it in other formats of your choice.
