To create our Snapchat filters, we are going to use the following Plus Hub products. A photo of friends celebrating, wedding lights clipart and a champagne bottle svg. With the free trial mentioned above you will also have access to the Plus Hub.

We will also be using this Cheerful Designer font.

Step 1 - Set Up Snapchat Filter Document

We first need to create a new document that is the size of a typical Snap. Before adding a custom size, change the DPI to 300. Then adjust the Width to 1080 px and Height to 1920.

The elements for our Snapchat filter will be changed to white to create more impact. So, to make this easier to see as we build up the filter, we will add color to the background. We created a rectangle from the shapes selection and used a light blue color #cafefe.

The rectangle will be placed on it’s own layer and can easily be hidden or deleted when done.

Step 2 - Create Smart Objects with Elements

Now we can begin adding the elements to build up our filter. For each set of elements we will be creating a Smart Object. This will contain and protect the elements, allowing us to edit them as needed.

Add Elements for Top Design

Drag and drop in one of the PNG string lights and place it at the top. We also transformed and scaled the lights so they were at an angle.

Add string lights to top of document

Add more lights and resize and/or rotate until you are happy with the top design. Now, select all of the layers for the top part of the filter.

In our case, we have three layers. We clicked on the top layer, then Shift + clicked on the third layer so all were selected.

Create Smart Object of Layers

Next, go to Layer > Smart Object > Convert to Smart Object.

Convert layers into Smart Object

As you will see, all three layers will be combined into one. Double click this layer and give it an appropriate name. We used “Click Here” as a reminder that this layer is a Smart Object.

Edit Smart Object Layer

To change the color of the elements, double click on the Click Here Top Lights thumbnail. A new window will open where you will see the three initial layers. These can still be independently edited.

The elements will show in their full state which is why they may not appear to fill the document. But don’t worry, unless you move them here, they won’t change position on the original document.

Now change the color of each layer to white by adding a Color Overlay.

Repeat this for each element in this Smart Object. Once you are done, click on File > Save (Smart Object) and DesignScape will notify you when the changes have been saved.

Save Smart Object changes DesignScape

Click back on the New Project document and you will see the changes immediately. You can go back into the Smart Object and make as many changes as you like. Just remember to save after each edit so the change will reflect.

Step 3 - Finish Building up Snapchat Filter

Now that you know how to create and use Smart Objects, let’s finish building up our Snapchat Filter.

Create Bottom Element Smart Object

You can now go ahead and add the bottom elements following the process in Step 2. Here we used more string lights and two champagne bottles. Remember to create a Smart Object for this selection of elements and save when making changes.

If needed, you can still adjust the color of the rectangle to better view the elements. Just click on the Rectangle Shape layer, then select the Rectangle Tool on the left side. At the top click on the Color Picker and change the color.

Type out your Text

To customize this Snapchat Filter in DesignScape, we are going to add some text. If you need more information, have a look at our tutorial on text basics in DesignScape.

We also made a few more adjustments to the bottom elements.

Step 4 - Import your Image

Your Snapchat filter is now ready. Before importing your image, click on the eye icon next to the Shape 1 (Rectangle Layer) and Background layers to hide them. You can even delete both layers as they are no longer needed.

Now, drag and drop your image into DesignScape.

We want the image to be beneath the Snapchat filter. Click on the imported image layer, then, go to Layer > Arrange > Send to Back.

Arrange order of image layer

Edit the Imported Image if Needed

If you feel that your image is a bit dull, you can add a Levels Adjustment layer for more contrast. Click on the New Adjustment Layer icon bottom of the Layers Panel and select Levels. Now, adjust as needed.

Finally, you can save your document as a PSD file. This will allow you to edit the Snapchat Filter at any given time and quickly swap out your images in DesignScape.

We also saved our image as a JPEG to be shared with friends and family. Here is the final result.
