Step 1 - Upload and Prepare the Design

After you have downloaded and unzipped your purchased design, we need to upload the SVG to Cricut Design Space. Once you have done that, add the design to your canvas.

For this tutorial, we want to create a vinyl stencil from this design to be used for glass etching. It’s a lovely way to personalize gifts for family and guests at your wedding. We will need to prepare the design first by using the Shapes tool found on the left-side toolbar.

Use the Shapes tool - Cricut Slice tutorial

Choose a shape that you want to you in the design. We chose the square to create a boundary for the vinyl glass etching stencil. Next, edit the size by clicking + dragging a corner handle inwards or outwards. You can also be more precise and input a size in the Sizing option on the top toolbar.

Reposition the square shape over the SVG design. Use the Arrange option at the top toolbar to place the shape behind the design.

Change the color of the shape to better see the design using the Color Swatch on the top toolbar. The color does not matter, we just want to make the SVG more visible so it can be placed more accurately.

Step 2 - Use the Slice Tool in Cricut Design Space

Click + drag a selection box around both of the designs or select the layers under the Layers Panel. On the bottom right-hand side, click on the Slice tool. If you are having problems using the Slice tool, make sure that only two designs are selected. The tool will not work with more than two selections at any given time.

After using the Slice tool, it may appear as if nothing happened. In order to see the sections that were cut, you will need to remove or delete them first. In the image below, we move all of the cut sections aside.

As you can see, the Slice tool has cut out the SVG design from the gray square shape. This is perfect for use as a vinyl stencil and glass etching. The border of the box will help protect the glass from the etching cream. When using etching cream, it is recommended to cover as much of the glass as possible with additional tape.
